Yellow Lab Imaging makes it easy to order photo prints online with the quality, personal service, and material standards that mass-market labs routinely cut corners on. Whether you are printing everyday snapshots, square prints, iPhone photos, or professional enlargements, we produce every order with the same care — and ship nationwide.
If you are looking for a Shutterfly alternative, the difference starts with how we think about materials. Every print we produce uses archival paper and archival inks — a combination independently rated to last 100 years or more when displayed under glass, away from direct sunlight and moisture. That is not a marketing claim. It is a materials standard most online labs do not meet.
Most online photo labs offer glossy, matte, or lustre. We simplified it — because we think those choices are often more confusing than helpful.
Lustre photo prints are the standard finish at Yellow Lab Imaging — and our most popular product by a wide margin. If you have ever held a print from a professional photo lab and noticed how it looks rich and vivid without the mirror-like glare of a glossy print, you were almost certainly looking at lustre.
The lustre surface has a fine, subtle texture embedded in the paper itself. That texture does two things: it softens specular reflections so the print looks good under a variety of lighting conditions, and it makes the surface slightly resistant to fingerprints. The result is a print you can actually handle, frame, and display without it looking like a crime scene every time someone touches it.
Lustre works well across a wide range of subject matter — which is exactly why it is the default finish at most professional photo labs. Here is where it consistently performs:
We print lustre photo prints on professional-grade lustre paper using archival pigment inks. The paper and ink combination we use carries an independent archival rating of 100+ years under standard display conditions — meaning displayed under glass, indoors, away from direct sunlight and moisture. That rating is not a marketing claim; it is a measurable materials standard based on accelerated aging tests.
Most consumer photo labs — the big online services and the kiosk at the drug store — use dye-based inks on commodity paper. Dye inks are cheaper to run and faster to dry, but they fade measurably faster over time. The difference is most visible after five to ten years of display. We use pigment inks because the prints are meant to last.
We offer lustre photo prints in all standard sizes, from wallet prints up through large-format enlargements. Our most popular sizes are 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 — the everyday workhorses. But we also print 4x4, 5x5, 8x8, 3x3, 10x15, 11x14, and larger sizes for wall display. If you need a size you do not see listed, contact us — we can usually accommodate non-standard sizes.
We get this question occasionally. The short answer is that glossy photo prints look great in a plastic sleeve or a direct light source and significantly worse in most real-world display situations. Fingerprints are immediately visible. Framing adds another layer of reflective glare. The surface scratches easily. Lustre gives you essentially the same color vibrancy without those drawbacks — which is why professional photo labs have largely moved away from glossy as a standard finish. If you specifically remember glossy prints from a consumer lab and liked them, lustre will not disappoint you.
Pearl is a fundamentally different paper. It has a high-gloss finish with metallic flake embedded in the paper itself — which means colors do not just appear bright, they appear luminous. Highlights glow. Shadows gain depth. Images with strong color or dramatic contrast print exceptionally well on Pearl. It is particularly popular for portraits, landscapes, and any image where you want the print to feel like more than a photograph. Pearl is available in all standard print sizes and carries the same archival rating as our Lustre paper.
We do not offer standard glossy or standard matte finishes for photo prints. Glossy picks up fingerprints easily and can produce unpleasant glare in frames. Plain matte, while useful for certain applications, does not deliver the color vibrancy most customers expect from a photo print. Lustre gives you the best of both without the drawbacks of either. If you specifically need a matte surface — for fine art reproduction, exhibition work, or archival printing — we offer Fine Art Archival Matte and Fine Art Velvet as a separate, higher-end product category.
Not every image needs the same format. The size and shape of your print should match how you plan to use it — and how you cropped the original image. Here is a quick overview of the most popular options:
