How to Choose the Right Paper for Professional Photo Printing

The paper you print on changes everything. Two prints of the same image — same file, same lab — can look completely different depending on the surface they land on. Paper affects color saturation, shadow depth, highlight detail, how the print handles light, and how long it lasts. If you have ever been disappointed by a print that looked great on screen but flat or washed out in person, there is a good chance paper choice was part of the problem.

At Yellow Lab Imaging, we offer three categories of print surface: standard Lustre, Metallic Pearl, and Fine Art papers. We also print on canvas. Here is what each one actually does, and how to know which is right for your photos.

Lustre — The Professional Standard

Lustre photo prints are our most popular finish and our default for standard orders. Lustre sits between matte and gloss: it has more richness and depth than matte, but without the high reflectivity and fingerprint problems that come with a full gloss surface. The result is a print that looks clean and professional in almost any environment.

Lustre has a fine texture built into the paper surface. That texture does two things: it scatters light slightly so you do not get harsh glare under overhead lighting, and it gives the ink something to grip, which contributes to the sharpness and color accuracy you see in the final print. It also means the surface is far more resistant to fingerprints than a glossy print — which matters if the print will be handled, displayed without glass, or used in a scrapbook or collage.

Lustre works best for: Portraits, family photos, event photography, everyday photo prints, professional portfolios, scrapbooking and collage projects, and any situation where the print will be handled or displayed without a frame.

Archival rating: All of our Lustre prints are produced on archival paper with archival inks, rated to last 100+ years when framed under glass and kept away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Metallic Pearl — Depth and Luminosity

Metallic Pearl is a fundamentally different material, not just a shinier version of Lustre. The paper has microscopic metallic flakes embedded throughout the base layer. When light hits the surface, those flakes reflect it back in a way that makes the print look almost backlit — colors appear to glow from within rather than sit on top of the paper.

The practical effect is significant. Shadows get deeper. Highlights have more pop. Colors with strong saturation — blues, greens, reds — look more intense. Skin tones pick up a warmth and dimension that flat paper cannot replicate. Pearl has a high-gloss surface, which means it is more reflective than Lustre. In very bright rooms with overhead lighting, it can create glare. For display, Pearl prints do best framed with UV-protective glass or in rooms where you can control the light angle.

Pearl works best for: Landscape photography, travel photography, wedding and portrait work where you want extra depth and warmth, nature and wildlife images, bold commercial photography, and any image with strong color contrasts or bright highlights.

Pearl is available in all standard print sizes, including our 3x3 Pearl prints — a great option for square Instagram photos where you want more visual punch.

Fine Art Papers — Gallery-Quality Output

Fine Art prints are a different class of product entirely — different paper, different ink, different process, and a different price point. They are designed for photographers and artists who need archival, exhibition-quality output.

We offer two Fine Art paper surfaces:

Matte Fine Art — A bright-white, ultra-smooth surface with no sheen. All detail, no distraction. Matte is the traditional choice for black and white photography, where gloss surfaces can make tonal gradients look harsh. It is also a strong choice for portraiture and documentary work where you want the image to speak quietly rather than announce itself.

Velvet Fine Art — A warmer paper with a subtle watercolor-like texture and warm base tone. Velvet produces a slightly more organic, painterly result. It is a favorite for fine art reproduction, landscape work, and artistic portraits where you want the texture of the paper to be part of the experience.

Fine Art prints are produced with pigment inks — a higher-grade ink than standard dye-based inks — which contributes significantly to both color accuracy and archival longevity.

A note on color management: Fine Art printing requires careful color management to get right. At Yellow Lab Imaging, our monitors are hardware-calibrated using a Datacolor Spyder 5 Pro, which reads both the monitor output and the ambient light in the room and adjusts calibration accordingly. We also apply the ICC profile provided by the paper manufacturer for each specific paper type. This is the difference between a print that matches your vision and one that is close but slightly off.

Fine Art works best for: Fine art photography, gallery exhibitions and portfolio prints, artistic reproduction of paintings and drawings, black and white photography, and any project where archival longevity and color accuracy are non-negotiable.

Canvas Gallery Wraps — When You Do Not Want a Frame

Our Canvas Gallery Wraps are in their own category because they are not a flat print — they are a finished piece of wall art, ready to hang the moment you open the box. The image is printed on a 65/35 poly-cotton museum-grade canvas, then stretched over a solid pine frame that is hand-built to fit each order specifically.

After printing, each canvas receives two coats of UV gloss protectant with curing time between each coat, before the stretching process begins. The textured surface gives the print a painterly quality that works beautifully with landscapes, portraits, and bold color images.

Canvas works best for: Living room and bedroom wall art, large display pieces, portraits and family photos meant to be centerpiece decor, landscape and travel photography, and gifts where you want to give something that does not need to be framed.
