Not every Instagram photo needs the same print size. Here’s how to choose the best option based on how you want to use, display, and enjoy your favorite square images.
Instagram changed how we share photos. But a phone screen — even a great one — is no substitute for a print you can hold, frame, and keep. If you have been wondering what size to order when you print your Instagram photos, the answer depends on what you want to do with them. This guide covers everything: the right sizes for square photos, how to handle non-square Instagram posts, what paper finish works best, and how to avoid the cropping mistakes that ruin otherwise great prints.
The short version: for most Instagram-style square photos, 3x3 photo prints are the most natural fit. But there is more to the decision than that, and it is worth understanding your options before you order.
Instagram originally launched as a square-only platform, and square photos are still what most people think of when they think "Instagram photo." The native square format on Instagram is 1080 x 1080 pixels — a 1:1 aspect ratio. That maps directly to square print sizes like 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, and 8x8.
However, Instagram has expanded well beyond square. The platform now supports portrait (4:5 ratio, like a 4x5 or 8x10 print), landscape (1.91:1, closer to a 4x6), and full-portrait Reels (9:16). So the first question to ask before you order is: was this image posted as a square, or as a portrait or landscape? The answer changes which print size makes the most sense.
If your photo was posted as a square — or was originally shot square — you have several good options depending on what you want to do with the print.
3x3 prints are the go-to size for printing Instagram square photos. They are compact, affordable, and perfectly preserve the square composition without any cropping. If you are printing a batch of favorites — vacation shots, family moments, a year of highlights — 3x3 prints make sense both creatively and practically. They work beautifully in scrapbooks, photo collages, memory boards, small frames, and as part of a gallery wall arrangement.
One thing worth knowing: because 3x3 is a true square, your image prints exactly as it appears on screen. No awkward cropping, no white borders, no guessing. What you posted is what you get.
4x4 prints give you a bit more visual space while keeping the square format. They are a good choice when the image has detail you want to see more clearly, or when you want something that stands out slightly more in a collage or frame arrangement without going all the way to a larger size.
5x5 prints start to move into display territory. At this size, a square print looks intentional and polished in a simple frame. They are a good choice for a single favorite image you want to display on a shelf or desk rather than use in a project.
8x8 prints are the largest standard square print size and are built for display. If you have a portrait photo, a travel image, or a moment you want to actually hang on the wall, an 8x8 in a matching frame makes a genuinely striking piece. This is the size to choose when you want the photo to be the focal point of a room, not just part of a collection.
Not every Instagram photo is square anymore, and that matters when you go to print. Here is how to think about the other formats:
Portrait posts (4:5 ratio): These are taller than they are wide — common for close-up portraits and vertical shots. The closest standard print size is a 4x5 or 8x10. If you try to print a 4:5 portrait as a square, you will lose the top and bottom of the image.
Landscape posts (roughly 1.91:1): Wide horizontal images are closest to a 4x6 or 5x7 print. Ordering a square print from a landscape image will crop the sides significantly.
The bottom line: match your print size to the aspect ratio of your image, not just to the fact that it was posted on Instagram. If you are not sure, our team reviews every order before printing — if something looks like it will crop in a way you would not expect, we will flag it.
Once you have picked a size, you have one more decision: paper finish. At Yellow Lab Imaging, the two options for standard prints are Lustre and Metallic Pearl.
Lustre is our default and most popular finish. It has a subtle texture that sits between matte and gloss — rich color, excellent sharpness, and very resistant to fingerprints. For everyday Instagram prints, family photos, and scrapbook use, Lustre is usually the right call. It looks great in frames and handles well in hands-on projects.
Metallic Pearl is a step up in visual intensity. The paper has microscopic metallic flakes embedded in it that give prints a luminous, almost backlit quality. Colors are deeper, highlights are more dramatic, and the print has a presence that Lustre does not quite match. Pearl works especially well for travel photography, bold landscapes, and photos with strong color and contrast. It is a great choice if you want an Instagram photo to look like a piece of wall art rather than a snapshot.
Both finishes are printed on archival paper with archival inks, rated to last 100+ years when framed under glass and kept away from direct sunlight and moisture.
The number one issue people run into when printing Instagram photos is unexpected cropping. Here is why it happens: Instagram compresses and sometimes slightly re-crops images when you upload them, and the image you see in your camera roll may have slightly different proportions than what ended up on your feed. When you download your photos to print, check the actual pixel dimensions before ordering.
For a clean 3x3 print, your image should be square — ideally 1080x1080 pixels or larger. If it is not perfectly square, you will either get a white border or the lab will crop it to fit. At Yellow Lab Imaging, we print what you send us. If your file is not square and you order a 3x3, the edges will be trimmed to make it fit. If you want to avoid any cropping, square your image in your phone's photo editor before uploading your order.
